Subsquently, when you plug the camera in at a later date it still doesn't know what to do with it, even if the software has been installed. If it cannot find one, and it won't unless you've installed it, then it stores that device as a 'bad' device that is one that it doesn't know what to do with. When you install a PnP device on Windows it attempts to find a suitable driver for that device, by searching its local device driver database and, if applicable, the Windows web site. The reason for saying install the software first is, basically, as follows. Not sure you will be able to get at the pictures without the driver. The software bundle comes with a TWAIN driver to allow any Windows applications to get the pictures out of the camera.
